The Story

This book was published on the occasion of Picasso: Mosqueteros at Gagosian, West 21st Street, New York. Centering on paintings and prints from the artist’s final decade, the exhibition was curated by Sir John Richardson, author of the acclaimed multivolume biography A Life of Picasso. Casting new light on Pablo Picasso’s unrelenting creativity in his later years, it considers the context, subjects, and sources of works made during this period.

This substantial volume is extensively illustrated with over one hundred works—including all those exhibited—and historical photographs, together with a foreword by Larry Gagosian and new essays by Richardson, Dakin Hart, and Memory Holloway. Jeff Koons contributed a reflection on “Picasso and the Objective” and Roberto Otero imagined a conversation between himself and Picasso. Previously untranslated contemporaneous writing on Picasso’s late work includes an essay by Hélène Parmelin and all texts originally included in the four catalogues from Picasso’s Avignon exhibitions in 1970 and 1973, written by Christian Zervos, Rafael Alberti, and René Char.
